What a First Solo Means
The first solo is the moment a student pilot flies the aircraft completely alone for the first time: no instructor in the right seat, just the student, the checklist and the runway. It usually comes at around 20 to 30 flight hours, once the instructor is confident the student can take off, fly the pattern and land safely on their own. It is the first real proof that you are becoming a pilot, and it is the flight every pilot remembers for the rest of their life.

And yes, there is a tradition that follows. After a successful first solo the pilot gets soaked with a bucket of water on the ramp, and Lance took it exactly the way you are supposed to: smiling. The custom goes back generations in aviation and marks the moment a student stops being a passenger in their own training.
