On October 8 another Pelican student reached the milestone every pilot remembers: Richard completed his first solo flight at North Perry Airport. Congratulations, Richard.

What a First Solo Means

The first solo is the flight a student pilot makes completely alone for the first time, with no instructor on board. It usually comes at around 20 to 30 flight hours, once the instructor is confident the student can take off, fly the traffic pattern and land safely on their own. For most pilots it is the day training stops feeling like a lesson and starts feeling like flying.

Watch the Moment

Back on the ramp, the tradition followed: a bucket of water over the new solo pilot, then a handshake from the instructor. Richard took both with a smile, which is exactly how it is supposed to go.

South Florida weather lets our students fly year round, so milestones like this one come on schedule. Ready for your own first solo? Explore our flight training programs or apply today.
