Why US Citizens Choose Pelican

The US airline pilot hiring market is in one of the strongest cycles in its history. Regional airlines (Republic, Envoy, PSA, SkyWest, GoJet, Endeavor) and majors (American Airlines Cadet, Delta Propel, United Aviate, Southwest Destination 225) are all running active pilot pipelines through 2030. Most US regional and major airline first officer roles require a CPL with Instrument and Multi-Engine ratings as the foundation, then 1,500 total hours for the ATP Certificate before the final hiring decision.

Pelican Flight Training fits the US career-track student profile because:

  • $68,310 Professional Pilot Program. The lowest full Zero-to-CPL program price among major Florida Part 141 schools, $40,685+ less than ATP Flight School.
  • 365 flying days per year in Pembroke Pines, Florida. Compare to flight training in the Pacific Northwest (180-220 flyable days), Midwest (220-280), or New England (240-280). The weather day difference is a real cost saving over a 14-18 month program.
  • Career changer friendly. Our flexible 14-18 month pace accommodates working adults who can train 3-5 days per week instead of full-time. Our average career-change student is in their late 30s or early 40s and successfully completes the full program.
  • Helicopter training also available. One of only four FAA Part 141 helicopter-accredited schools in the United States, useful for US students considering EMS, ENG, offshore (Gulf of Mexico, Bakken oil patch helicopter ops), tour or VIP transport careers.
  • 40-year alumni network at most US regional airlines and corporate operations. Graduate placement is independent (no direct hire pipeline like ATP), but the alumni network is real and active.

How to Pay for Flight School: Financing Options for US Citizens

Most US citizens combine multiple financing sources to cover flight school. The realistic financing stack is some mix of personal savings, scholarships, private student loans, school payment plans, and for veterans VA education benefits or VA Vocational Rehabilitation.

Private Student Loans for Flight School

Three lenders dominate the flight training private loan market in 2026:

LenderLoan LimitTypical APR (2026)Approval Time
Sallie Mae Career Training Smart Option Up to cost of attendance 6.5% - 13.5% variable, 7.5% - 14.5% fixed 7-14 days
AOPA Flight Training Loan $5,000 - $100,000 8.5% - 17.5% fixed 5-10 days
Stratus Financial Up to $200,000 9.5% - 17.5% fixed 7-21 days

For the full breakdown of financing options, see our blog article how to finance flight school in 2026.

School Payment Plans

Pelican offers stage-based payment plans where you pay for each rating (PPL, IR, CPL, MEL) at the start of that stage. Contact admissions to discuss the plan that fits your situation.

Veterans: VA Benefits and Veteran Support at Pelican

Pelican Flight Training has supported US military veterans since the company's founding in 1985. Multiple veteran pathways are available, depending on your service status and individual benefit eligibility.

VA Education Benefits

Veteran education benefits can apply toward tuition and fees at approved Part 141 flight schools, plus a monthly housing allowance and books and supplies stipend.

  • Tuition coverage: Up to the national maximum for private schools ($28,937.09 per academic year for the 2025-2026 award year, updated annually).
  • Monthly housing allowance: Based on E-5 BAH rate for the school location. South Florida is approximately $2,500 to $3,200 per month.
  • Books and supplies stipend: Up to $1,000 per academic year.

VA Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (Chapter 31)

For veterans with a service-connected disability rating, Chapter 31 may cover the full cost of flight school plus monthly subsistence. This is the most generous VA benefit available for pilot training. Chapter 31 application is through your VA Regional Office, not directly through Pelican.

Other veteran considerations at Pelican

  • Veterans in our community: Multiple veterans (US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard) currently in training at Pelican. Strong veteran peer support during your program.
  • VA loan financing: For housing during training, veterans can use VA home loan benefits (with no down payment, no PMI) to purchase rather than rent in the Pembroke Pines area.

Scholarships for US Pilots

Aviation scholarships rarely cover full flight school cost, but they can significantly reduce your financing need. Major organizations offering scholarships in 2026:

  • AOPA Foundation: 80+ scholarships per year, $2,500 to $15,000 each. Categories include student pilots, primary training, advanced training, high school aviation. Apply at aopa.org/foundation.
  • Women in Aviation International (WAI): 100+ scholarships per year, $1,000 to $30,000+. Available to WAI members with many specifically for women.
  • Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP): Multiple categories for African American students pursuing aviation careers.
  • Latino Pilots Association: Multiple scholarships for Latino students.
  • EAA Scholarships: Multiple categories through national EAA and local EAA chapters.
  • National Gay Pilots Association (NGPA) Education Foundation: Scholarships for LGBTQ+ pilots in training.
  • The Ninety-Nines: International women pilots organization with several scholarship categories.

The realistic strategy is to apply for 8 to 15 scholarships in a single application cycle (typically January through April for fall enrollment). Most awards are $2,500 to $10,000. Students who apply broadly typically win 2 to 5 scholarships totaling $5,000 to $25,000.

Requirements for US Citizens

US citizens have a simpler enrollment process than international students (no visa required). Requirements:

  1. Age: 16 minimum for student pilot certificate (14 for glider/balloon). 17 minimum for Private Pilot Certificate. 18 minimum for Commercial Pilot Certificate.
  2. English proficiency: ICAO Level 4 minimum to be issued an FAA pilot certificate. US citizens generally meet this from native fluency.
  3. FAA Medical Certificate: Third Class for PPL (lowest level, valid 5 years if under 40 or 2 years if 40+). Second Class for CPL (1 year). First Class for ATP/airline (6 or 12 months depending on age). Get this from an FAA-authorized Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). Use the FAA AME locator at designee.faa.gov.
  4. TSA security threat assessment: Required for Part 141 students. Pelican processes this as part of admissions.
  5. High school diploma or equivalent: Required for the Professional Pilot Program.
  6. Background: No specific background requirements beyond TSA clearance.

For detailed medical requirements, see our blog articles FAA medical certificate requirements and pilot training medical requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take a US citizen to go from zero to airline first officer?

Realistic timeline: 14-18 months at Pelican to CPL with MEL and IR, then 9-18 months as a CFI building hours toward 1,500 total time for the ATP certificate. Total: 24-36 months from day one to first regional first officer position.

How much does Pelican cost for a US citizen?

$68,310 USD for the Professional Pilot Program tuition. Plus $25,000-$45,000 living expenses over 14-18 months. Plus approximately $5,000-$8,000 in FAA fees, examiner fees, books, headset and medical. Realistic all-in: $98,000 to $130,000.

What VA benefits work for flight training?

The main options are: (1) VA education benefits for approved Part 141 flight training, and (2) VA Vocational Rehabilitation Chapter 31 for service-connected disability veterans (the most generous option). Contact your VA Regional Office or VA Education benefits counselor to confirm specific benefit eligibility before enrollment.

Do I need a 4-year degree to fly for a major US airline?

Increasingly no. Most US major airlines have eliminated the 4-year degree requirement since 2022-2023 due to pilot shortage. A high school diploma plus the FAA certificates and 1,500 ATP hours is the current minimum for most major hire pipelines (American Airlines Cadet Academy, United Aviate, Delta Propel, Southwest Destination 225). Some carriers still prefer degree holders, and degrees can shortcut the path through R-ATP eligibility (1,000 hours instead of 1,500). See our blog article do you need a degree to become a pilot.

What is the difference between Pelican and ATP Flight School?

Pelican costs $40,000 less for the same end certificate ($68,310 vs $108,995). ATP is faster (7 months vs 14-18 months) and has direct hire pipelines to specific regional airlines. Pelican has more flexibility on pace and lower cost. Pelican also offers helicopter training; ATP does not. See our full comparison: Pelican vs ATP Flight School.

Can I work while in flight training?

Yes, especially under a 14-18 month flexible pace. Many career-change students work part-time (typically 15-25 hours per week) during training. CFI graduates often work as instructors at Pelican itself while building hours toward ATP, generating $30,000-$50,000 of income during the time-building phase.

What if I am over 40, is it too late?

Not at all. The mandatory retirement age for US airline pilots is 65. A career changer who starts at 40 has 25 years of potential airline career ahead, plenty of time to advance to mainline captain. We have students in their 40s and 50s training currently. See our blog article maximum age to become a commercial pilot.

I attended Pelican Flight Training at North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines, Florida, starting in November 2021, and I also worked at the school afterward as a Flight Instructor. Throughout my training and teaching, the school played a crucial role in helping me achieve my goals. The instructors and the training standards they uphold their students to are very professional. I met fantastic people and learned a lot from the experience as well as my peers.
